Why does it take time to get my firearm after ordering?
Understanding the Online Firearms Purchase Timeline:
Buying a firearm online involves several steps required by federal law. Here's why it takes a few days:
Step 1: Order Processing (1-2 business days)
- We verify your payment
- We confirm your FFL dealer's license is current and valid
Step 2: FFL Verification (1-2 business days)
- Email your FFL dealer's license to FFL@THEGUNDOCK.COM
- We verify your FFL with the ATF database
- If we already have your FFL on file, this step is faster
Step 3: Shipping (2-5 business days)
- Your firearm ships via FedEx or UPS
- Adult signature required on delivery
- Tracking information provided
- Ships directly to your FFL dealer's address
Step 4: Pickup at Your FFL Dealer
- Your FFL dealer notifies you when it arrives
- You complete Form 4473 and a background check (NICS)
- Most background checks take 5-10 minutes
- Bring a valid government-issued photo ID
Total Typical Timeline: 2-4 business days from order to pickup
What Can Cause Delays:
- Missing or expired FFL license
- Payment verification issues
- Background check delays (common with common names)
- State-specific waiting periods
How to Speed Things Up:
- Submit your FFL dealer info right away
- Make sure your payment goes through cleanly
- Contact your FFL dealer ahead of time - every dealer has their own transfer rules and fees
- Have your ID ready when picking up
Why These Steps Exist:
Federal law requires that all firearms sales go through a licensed FFL dealer with a background check. These laws help ensure firearms only go to people legally allowed to own them.Questions about your order timeline? Email support@thegundock.com and we'll give you an update.
