How long does the background check take?
TYPICAL TIMEFRAMES:
When you pick up your firearm at your local FFL dealer, they will run a background check (NICS). Here's what to expect:
Most Common: IMMEDIATE (5-10 minutes)
- 90%+ of background checks are instant
- You get "PROCEED" right away
- Leave with your firearm the same day
Sometimes: DELAYED (up to 3 business days)
- NICS says "DELAYED" - not denied!
- Usually resolves within 24-72 hours
- Your FFL dealer will notify you when it clears
- Common for people with common names
Rare: DENIED
- Something in your record prevents purchase
- You can appeal through FBI NICS
- Neither we nor your FFL dealer can override a denial
WHAT AFFECTS TIMING:
- Your name: Common names get delayed more often
- NICS system load: Busy days (Black Friday) slower
- Your record: Any past issues may cause delays
- Incomplete info: Missing data causes delays
IF YOU'RE DELAYED:
- Don't panic - it's very common
- Your FFL dealer holds your firearm until cleared
- Usually clears within 1-2 days
- Rarely goes the full 3 days
UPIN (Unique Personal Identification Number):
- If you get delayed often, apply for a UPIN
- Helps speed up future purchases
- Available through FBI NICS
State-Specific:
- Some states have additional waiting periods
- Concealed carry permits may bypass NICS in some states
Note: The background check happens at your local FFL dealer when you pick up your firearm, not at The Gun Dock. If you have questions about your order or shipping, email support@thegundock.com.
