What happens when I pick up my firearm at my FFL dealer?
What to Expect at Your FFL Dealer:
When you purchase from The Gun Dock, your firearm ships to your chosen FFL dealer. Here's what happens when you go to pick it up:
What to Bring:
- Valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, military ID, or passport)
- ID must be current (not expired)
- Address on ID must be your current residence
- If you've moved, bring proof of current address (utility bill, bank statement, etc.)
The Process:
- Your FFL dealer contacts you when the item arrives
- You complete ATF Form 4473 (Firearms Transaction Record)
- Your FFL runs a background check (NICS) - usually takes 5-10 minutes
- Once you receive a "PROCEED" result, you can take possession
Important Rules:
- Only YOU (the buyer) can complete the paperwork and take possession
- Straw purchases are serious federal crimes - you cannot buy a gun for someone else
- All questions on Form 4473 must be answered truthfully
- Every FFL dealer has their own transfer rules and fees - we highly recommend contacting them beforehand
Age Requirements:
- 18+ for long guns (rifles/shotguns)
- 21+ for handguns
If Your Background Check is Delayed:
- Don't panic - delays are common, especially for common names
- Your FFL dealer holds the firearm until it clears
- Usually resolves within 1-3 business days
