What happens when I pick up my firearm at my FFL dealer?

What to Expect at Your FFL Dealer:

When you purchase from The Gun Dock, your firearm ships to your chosen FFL dealer. Here's what happens when you go to pick it up:

What to Bring:

  • Valid government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, military ID, or passport)
  • ID must be current (not expired)
  • Address on ID must be your current residence
  • If you've moved, bring proof of current address (utility bill, bank statement, etc.)

The Process:

  1. Your FFL dealer contacts you when the item arrives
  2. You complete ATF Form 4473 (Firearms Transaction Record)
  3. Your FFL runs a background check (NICS) - usually takes 5-10 minutes
  4. Once you receive a "PROCEED" result, you can take possession

Important Rules:

  • Only YOU (the buyer) can complete the paperwork and take possession
  • Straw purchases are serious federal crimes - you cannot buy a gun for someone else
  • All questions on Form 4473 must be answered truthfully
  • Every FFL dealer has their own transfer rules and fees - we highly recommend contacting them beforehand

Age Requirements:

  • 18+ for long guns (rifles/shotguns)
  • 21+ for handguns

If Your Background Check is Delayed:

  • Don't panic - delays are common, especially for common names
  • Your FFL dealer holds the firearm until it clears
  • Usually resolves within 1-3 business days
